Bacares, with 226 inhabitants (INE, 2025), lies in the Sierra de los Filabres, more than 1,200 metres above sea level and beneath three peaks over 2,000 metres. Part of its land is in the Calares de Sierra de los Filabres Special Area of Conservation, with the Tetica de Bacares and the Cueva Larga, one of the longest caves in the province.
Its Andalusí castle, built mainly in the 13th century, was restored in 2008-2009, and the early 16th-century church keeps a Mudéjar coffered ceiling. Its forges supplied ironwork for Almería Cathedral, and in the 15th century its silk was renowned in the area. During the mining boom its population rose above 5,000.
From 12 to 14 September it celebrates the Santo Cristo del Bosque, its patron, with a pilgrimage to his chapel, and on the first weekend of February, the Día del Romero, when residents who emigrated come home.
