About Olula del Río

Olula del Río, with 6,506 inhabitants (INE, 2025), sits in the centre of the Almanzora Valley, between the Sierra de las Estancias and the Sierra de los Filabres. Together with Macael it is one of the pillars of the marble industry, and the white stone can be seen in its pavements, façades and fountains.

It is also a town of museums. The Casa Ibáñez Museum, opened in 2004 by the local painter Andrés García Ibáñez, holds some 1,700 works, and the Pérez Siquier Centre, opened in 2017, keeps the archive of the Almería photographer Carlos Pérez Siquier. The old church of San Sebastián (1782-1789) was designed by Ventura Rodríguez, and the Almanzora Greenway crosses the municipality along the old railway line.

In January it celebrates San Sebastián and San Ildefonso, when roscos (ring-shaped buns) are thrown to the crowd, and in September the fair of the Virgen del Carmen, its patron saint. The Piedra Ver, a mountain with a sheer profile, appears on its coat of arms.
