About Urrácal
Urrácal, with 340 inhabitants (INE, 2025), lies in the Upper Almanzora, south of the Sierra de las Estancias. It received the title of villa in 1504 for its loyalty to the Catholic Monarchs, and its houses, on an Arab street plan, climb steep whitewashed streets around the Plaza de la Constitución. The municipality includes the hamlet of Agua Amarga.
A Chalcolithic arrowhead and a Tartessian stele have been found here. It had two printing presses, «La Economía» and «La Exactitud»; the second worked until 1985 and printed forms for the whole of Spain. Its hand-kneaded bakery bread has long been prized in the area.
It celebrates San Blas, its patron saint, in early February and again in August. On Easter Sunday it burns the Judas, and 25 April, San Marcos, is the day of hornazos (traditional egg-topped breads).
