Purchena, with 1,563 inhabitants (INE, 2025), lies in the Upper Almanzora, at the foot of the Sierra de los Filabres and beside the river. It is the seat of the judicial district covering 21 municipalities.
Its Nasrid alcazaba overlooks the town and houses the Torre del Agua, with a spring and a cistern inside. The church of San Ginés, begun around 1550 by Juan de Orea, combines the Renaissance with Mudéjar influence. The town also has the Municipal Museum of Islamic Archaeology and the «Valle del Almanzora Tiempo» centre, which serves as a tourist office.
In 1569, during the Morisco revolt, Aben Humeya held athletic and musical games here. The town revives them every August with the Moorish Games, declared of Tourist Interest, before the fiestas of San Ginés, its patron saint, on 25 August. It celebrates the Virgen del Carmen, its patron saint, on 16 July.
