Zurgena, with 3,059 inhabitants (INE, 2025), lies at the eastern end of the Almanzora Valley and has historically been considered its gateway. Its fertile land, inhabited since the Neolithic, keeps many residents working in farming.
Between 1885 and 1985, La Alfoquía was home to the most important railway station in the area, used by the mining trains that carried iron from Serón to Águilas. The Clock Tower rises at the top of the town, and the church of San Ramón Nonato was built where the mosque once stood.
It celebrates the Virgen del Carmen, its patron saint, in La Alfoquía on 16 July, and San Ramón Nonato on 31 August. Its Holy Week keeps the «Juego de la Bandera» (flag game) and the «Pujas» (auctions).
