About Serón

Serón, with 2,151 inhabitants (INE, 2025), lies in the Upper Almanzora, on the northern slope of the Sierra de los Filabres. Its old quarter of steep, narrow streets is crowned by a 13th-century Nasrid castle, and the Mudéjar church of the Anunciación was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1983.

Serón ham has Protected Geographical Indication status, with its Regulatory Council based in the town, and the meat industry has been present since the 18th century. In the mountains, the mining village of Las Menas recalls the iron mines that closed in 1968; to bring the ore down to the railway, the companies built aerial cableways several kilometres long.

Its patron saints are San Roque, San Marcos and San Cleofás. At the end of April, for San Marcos, it celebrates its big day, with the pilgrimage of the Virgen de la Cabeza and San Marcos and a parade of floats, and in August come the San Roque fiestas.
