About Sierro

Sierro, with 364 inhabitants (INE, 2025), lies in the Upper Almanzora, in the heart of the Sierra de los Filabres, and part of its land is within the Calares de Sierra de los Filabres Special Area of Conservation. Its name is thought to come from the Latin «serra», mountain range.

Its castle, an Islamic-period fortress with a double enclosure, a cistern and a tower, was restored in 2011 and can be visited. Its narrow streets keep covered passageways, or tinaos, such as Calle del Porche, where the sun never reaches the cobblestones. The village hosts SierroFoto, an international documentary photography seminar.

On 20 January it honours San Sebastián, its patron saint, but the main fiestas, with Moors and Christians, have been held in September since 1934, when the brotherhood decided to escape the winter cold. May brings the San Isidro pilgrimage and November its Mushroom Days.
