About Macael

Macael, with 5,436 inhabitants (INE, 2025), sits on the northern slope of the Sierra de los Filabres and is the name behind the fame of Almería’s white marble. Its economy revolves around quarrying and working the stone, now a highly industrialised sector.

In the Andalusí period its marble was used in the Alcazaba of Almería and in the Alhambra of Granada, including the Court of the Lions, and the town displays a replica of that fountain carved in Macael marble. Since 1985 it has awarded the Macael Prizes, which recognise professionals in architecture, design and stone, and since 2014 it has had a Marble Interpretation Centre.

Macael celebrates the Virgen del Rosario, its patron saint, with the October fair, and San Marcos on 25 April.

On this page you will find all the news from Macael: marble and its companies, local council news, incidents, culture, sport and jobs. Neighbouring towns: Olula del Río, Fines, Cantoria, Líjar, Chercos, Laroya and Purchena.
