Chercos, with 301 inhabitants (INE, 2025), lies in the Sierra de los Filabres, in the Almanzora Valley area. Its economy has depended above all on marble quarrying, and almonds and olives dominate its farmland. In the 1940s the village moved down from Chercos Viejo, higher up the hill, and so Chercos Nuevo was born.
Between the two lies the Piedra Labrá, or Piedra de los Moros, with rock carvings from the second millennium BC: human figures, indalo-like figures, warriors, horsemen, carts, animals and stars. Chercos Viejo keeps remains of its medieval alcazaba.
It celebrates San Lorenzo, its patron saint, around 10 August, with a community paella; San Antón, with a great bonfire, on 17 January; and at Easter it keeps the traditional game of bolos.
