Taberno, with 955 inhabitants (INE, 2025), sits in the north-east of the Almanzora Valley, on a spur of the Sierra de las Estancias. It split from Vélez-Rubio and formed its own town council in 1839. According to the town hall, the village grew up around a small inn or «taberna», and because it was small it was given a masculine name.
Since 1998 the Habitat Interpretation Centre-Farm Museum has gathered more than 2,000 tools and utensils donated by residents, and the Calvario chapel, at the highest point of the village, is where the Good Friday procession ends. Its dry riverbeds host the Taberno Rally, part of the Andalusian Championship.
It celebrates San José, its patron saint, in August, and at Easter it holds «Las Meriendas». Its cooking is known for potaje de trigo, a wheat stew.
