Oria, with 2,219 inhabitants (INE, 2025), lies in the north of the Almanzora Valley, with the town centre at around 1,040 metres above sea level. Almonds dominate its farming, covering more than 6,800 hectares of the municipality.
It keeps remains of its Andalusí alcazaba and the baroque church of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes (1767-1779), promoted by the Marquis de los Vélez. At El Picacho, a Bronze Age site discovered in 1970, thirteen graves were found with their grave goods.
It celebrates the Virgen de las Mercedes, its patron saint, with the mid-August fair, and lights the San Antón bonfires on the night of 16 January. Its cuadrillas de ánimas (traditional folk music groups) visit homes and hamlets from 8 December (the Immaculate Conception) until after Epiphany, and the hamlet of Ogarite stages Moors and Christians in honour of San Gregorio.
